Start A Fire 03:35
Tempt me tempt me I will follow But I won’t need your love tomorrow I’ll take you to the station when it all ends I’ll start a fire to burn it all Start a fire to burn it all down I’ll make a chain of daisies and three leaf clovers And you can put your hand upon my shoulders I listen to every single word you said And I wrote it down to get it out I wrote it down to get it out of my head Took you to the banks of the river where my heart beats To the base of the bridge that’s become a part of me You touched the dust on the wings of a butterfly And I wrote it down to get it out I wrote it down to get it out of my head Tempt me tempt me I will follow But I won’t need your love tomorrow I’ll take you to the station when it all ends I’ll start a fire to burn it all Start a fire to burn it all down Start a fire to burn it all Start a fire to burn it all down Start a fire to burn it all Start a fire Start a fire to burn it all To get it out of my head To get it out of my head

Of Roses 04:30
Staying up late ‘Cause the night needs my company And in the days My body moves with muscle memory What a waste And in the hearts of all the champions I face Throwing horseshoes throwing shade Losing focus shifting through The hours of the day Running up hill from the Permanent escape Holding on tightly to this plastic bouquet Of roses What’s it for My beating heart that’s pounding On the door To the locked up china cabinet I need more Than four walls around this fragile Sorrow Throwing horseshoes throwing shade Losing focus shifting through The hours of the day Running up hill from the Permanent escape Holding on tightly to this Plastic bouquet Of roses, of roses If time stood still Just for a moment so I Could feel a thrill And remove this heavy blanket In dreams I see your face and I tremble I don’t wanna leave Throwing horseshoes throwing shade Losing focus shifting through the Hours of the day Running up hill from the Permanent escape Holding on tightly to this Plastic bouquet Of roses, of roses, of roses, of roses

There's such a sad love Deep in your eyes a kind of pale jewel Open and closed Within your eyes I'll place the sky Within your eyes There's such a fooled heart Beating so fast In search of new dreams A love that will last Within your heart I'll place the moon Within your heart As the pain sweeps through Makes no sense for you Every thrill is gone Wasn't too much fun at all But I'll be there for you-ou-ou As the world falls down Falling Falling Falling in love I'll paint you mornings of gold I'll spin you Valentine evenings though we're strangers 'til now We're choosing the path Between the stars I'll leave my love Between the stars As the pain sweeps through Makes no sense for you Every thrill is gone Wasn't too much fun at all But I'll be there for you-ou-ou As the world falls down Falling Falling Falling Falling in love Falling Falling Falling Falling in love

Bad move, trouble zone Hard times, overload Forgive a little, forget me not I was warned, but I forgot Sleepover slumber party After the masquerade Eyes covered in sparkles Gold and red and blue We were all made of stardust And I couldn’t take my eyes off of you Dressed up in twilight At the masquerade Wrapped up in pleasure In silk, torn and frayed Twisted in the sheets of your fantasy Mmmm mmmm Lovers weep in the darkness And in the shadows they fall to the ground Pierced by thorns and brambles Watching as the blood drips down Sleepover slumber party After the masquerade Collect a wage call your brother Skip stones down at the riverside Think of me every so often But you will never know the tears I’ve cried Sleepover slumber party After the masquerade

I Can't Love 04:28
I can’t speak I can’t feel I can’t understand Why you’re telling me to love ‘Cause I can’t love I can’t love On the couch Move to the floor Crawl to my jeans And put ‘em on Get in the car In search of a new town ‘Cause I can’t understand Why you’re telling me to love ‘Cause I can’t love I can’t love Stars in the rearview Glitter in the sky Ashes of a memory Holding hands in the night Take my breath Fully away ‘Cause I can’t understand Why you’re telling me to love ‘Cause I can’t love I can’t love

In My Dreams 04:12
It was a dream sunset But the motel was cold And the moments flew by In the wind as it rolled Onto the cluttered bench In the backseat of your car I felt happiness within me I felt pleasure in the dark Was it all just a dream Under April showers And heading to the town Where your brother was born And with the windows rolled down You touched my cheek And said soon you’re gonna wake up ‘Cause this has all been a dream But I don’t wanna get there ‘Cause I don’t wanna wake up alone Stranded in the darkness Sorrow filling up my lungs I wanna fly soar through the air with your love In my dreams In my dreams It was a big screen movie You caught a star shooting down Like a rocket through space dust Leaving sparks all around You place it in my hand And said this is where you’ll find me When you wake up ‘Cause this has all been a dream But I don’t wanna get there ‘Cause I don’t wanna wake up alone Stranded in the darkness Sorrow filling up my lungs I wanna fly soar through the air with your love In my dreams In my dreams But I don’t wanna get there ‘Cause I don’t wanna wake up alone Stranded in the darkness Sorrow filling up my lungs I wanna fly soar through the air with your love In my dreams In my dreams In my dreams, in my dreams, in my dreams In my dreams, in my dreams, in my dreams In my dreams, in my dreams, in my dreams

Waterline 03:11
All my friends they tell me how they’re feeling So damn good they’re staring at the ceiling Devastation jitters through the mind Reach through my door and show me that you’re fine Long John’s turned inside Proud Mary screams and shouts We’ll find freedom at the waterline Clear your throat there’s silence in the seasons Visit your lover commit high treason Sell your soul into damnation Illuminate your public isolation Long John’s turned inside out Proud Mary screams and shouts We’ll find freedom at the waterline Long John’s turned inside out Proud Mary screams and shouts We’ll find freedom at the waterline Reverent heart you are a mystery Remove the haze that you washed over me My housecoat is bourbon stained Still insomnia nips at my brain Long John’s turned inside out Proud Mary screams and shouts we’ll find freedom at the waterline Long John’s turned inside out Proud Mary screams and shouts We’ll find freedom at the waterline We’ll find freedom at the waterline We’ll find freedom at the waterline

Station 04:05
You’re a liar Picked up the passion Threw away all desire I’m coming closer to you I will grab your throat I’m a crier All the mistakes I keep in the pocket of my coat Catch fire All the memories they leave me loveless I need a little company I dropped her off at the station I fill myself with misery As I keep on behaving, behaving ooooh You’re a liar Picked up the passion Threw away all desire I’m coming closer to you I will grab your throat I’m a crier All the mistakes I keep in the pocket of my coat Catch fire All the memories they leave me loveless I need a little company I dropped her off at the station I fill myself with misery As I keep on behaving, behaving ooooh Oh I’m behaving, behaving ooooh

I was never told about it I never stole the truth from you How was I to feel with the memories Dead grass and the mourning gloom Pages for words and a mind to write How am I gonna sleep tonight Heels drag along the pavement Summer whispers in my ears Treasure is buried somewhere Somewhere far away from here Put your hands around my heart and squeeze tight How am I gonna sleep tonight Ooooh ooooh Playground hand blisters The suns burning my winter cheeks High school nightmares Sticks and stones that made me weak Love is on the edge, love is a fight How am I gonna sleep tonight Oooh oooh Dust on the mantle Screen door quietly creaks Something big on the horizon Handle me carefully Love is on the edge, love is a fight How am I gonna sleep tonight Put your hands around my heart and squeeze tight How am I gonna sleep tonight

The End 03:01
Would you kindly tell me what it is you got up to today Did you find new love is there a piece in your heart forever replaced ‘Cause I know the end is coming I can feel it in the blood of my body Tell me was it me Girl in the mirror in front of me I try to hide She’s sad and broken ugly from the pain you left inside Is there a light at the end of the tunnel Or is this the beginning of the end Tell me was it me Tell me was it me End of the road end of the line Is it the end of the day or the end of the night End of pretending dreams come true And I’m tired of waiting Tell me was it me Is there a light at the end of the tunnel Or is this the beginning of the end Tell me was it me ‘Cause I know the end is coming I can feel it in the blood of my body Tell me was it me End of the road end of the line Is it the end of the day or the end of the night End of pretending dreams come true And I’m tired of waiting Just tell me was it me Tell me was it me Would you kindly tell me what it is you got up to today

Sunglasses 03:08
Sunglasses House dress Hearts a-blazing Hairs a mess Where do we go from here Who will take me in In my sunglasses House dress Up the street Looking for my friend Knock three times Please let me in Cup of coffee Or a bottle of wine With my sunglasses Covering my eyes Don’t, don’t tell it to me softly Don’t, don’t break it to me too kind I, I’ve been wandering blindly And I just need a friend Somebody to lean on I just need a friend Somebody to lean on

about

Shaela Miller’s years spent doing good country music work are safely etched into public consciousness. A turn at this point is by no means an undoing, but a welcome lead into new waters. Her rising profile is being amplified by a sonic reintroduction to one of Canada’s best voices and most sincere stage personalities. On the heels of TV placements like HBO’s True Blood, CBC’s Heartland, top-tier festival circuiting, supporting Matthew Good’s tour and upcoming Canadian headlining tour, Shaela sets aside (at least for now) her Loretta Lynn likeness in favour of the synth laden corridors of a new sonic pathway. As Shaela puts it, “After The Masquerade is a trip back to where it all started for me. Except this time, with years of musical experience, wisdom, and capabilities of delivering my heart's desire. It’s an homage to the music that inspired me in my youth, and continues to inspire me today”.

Shaela’s new album After the Masquerade (March 22, 2024) is a self-indulgent trip back to a world of music she’s been patiently waiting to explore. The record was produced by Graham Lessard (Stars, Timbre Timbre) and recorded at Studio Bell in Calgary’s National Music Centre. Released on Canadian upstart Neon Moon Records, it’s a binary of “country and new wave that sees the two contrasting styles collide in dazzling fashion” (Plastic Mag) – a collision of genres that helped rear a young songwriter years ago.

The listener should take comfort in feeling a little tense as lyrical themes go deeper into the emotional well that Shaela mines as a songwriter. “Miller’s storytelling is profound, and her emotive delivery adds depth to the narrative” (Sinusoidal). Where dreams go unspent, the host can be left to wither, but that’s not what’s set to play out here. Welcome to her world - won’t you come on in?

about

Shaela Miller Lethbridge, Alberta

Shaela Miller’s spent over a decade in Alberta country, and no doubt, her Joan Jett vibe, songwriting chops, and outstanding vocal tone could have put her on a number of paths, but she’s never bowed to the constant, overwrought attention-seeking bombast so common to today’s country radio. ... more
